hello all,
have allready in the past just gone down to the auto store and picked up whatever they had in a can that said undercoating and went home and sprayed. It is my experience that there arent many good brands of undercoating that will cure completly and have a thick texture that come in a can. Do any of you have any brands in a can that you think is reliable and if possible can you post a link to it? I am going to undercoat a 1969 mini cooper that i am currently doing a frame off restoration on and it has quarter inch thick undercoating that I have to match where I removed the old stuff for rust work. I am putting a 200 hp honda vtec in it can we say 0---------------------------60 in 4 seconds? Link to my progress here:

Re: automobile undercoating that is worth a crap
Sun, September 17, 2006 - 12:07 PMCool, this is going to be a fun car ! For this I'd use " Rubberized " undercoat. It dries to the touch, other types don't. It does'nt have anything to do with the brand. It's all recycled petrolium paint products. Rubberized is the key. After a day or two, I put one coat of black enamal on. Simi-gloss gives it a great look. the paint seals the undercoat, dirt and such does'nt stick, so you can clean your under carrage with a hose. I do the same thing if I want a textured, but washable gravel coat on the outside of the rocker panels.
I've got a lot of years in pro-auto restoration, and building. I'll be happy to help, with advice. I'll be equaily happy to let you enjoy doing all of the work :-)
Keep us posted -

Re: automobile undercoating that is worth a crap
Sun, September 17, 2006 - 1:37 PMhey thanks, sounds perfect and the coat of black will help the two colors blend real nice, i just picked up 2 cans of 3M 08881 Rubberized Undercoat for like 12 bux shipped from amazon dot com. "I'll be equaily happy to let you enjoy doing all of the work :-) " yeah I hear that, i havnt done body work since i was 21, am 32 now, i dont remember it being this much work heh but it has to be better than any other job ive done sooo...., people keep coming by saying they want my help on their classic car and my response has been NO WAY! Its a labor of love! i worked in the collision repair industry for like 4 years, just long enough to learn the ins and outs plus am working as an engineer solving problems for a living which has helped alot. thanks for your advice! much appreciated! Re: automobile undercoating that is worth a crap
Sun, September 17, 2006 - 1:44 PMjust wanted to add, you cant pay for bodywork like this, I estimate about 1000 hours till bodywork and paint will be finished and i wouldnt work for less than 23.00 an hour. Thats literally the "beauty" of it! This thing is going to be priceless! I am really excited about it! It is going to cost at least 12k to build but will have a resale value of im guessing about 30k and thats IF I can ever bear to part with it!
Cheers!

Re: automobile undercoating that is worth a crap
Thu, June 4, 2009 - 12:30 PMHey Im just wondering if I could ask a quick question about prep work for undercoating, I have a 1996 Chevy Silverado 4x4 just bought it the body is in pretty good shape the underneath is coated in mud. I'm trying to scrape off all the mud from the bottom and then hopefully do a nice job undercoating, will probably take your advice on the undercoating application but what is the best way to get the body and frame as clean as possible before I apply the undercoating? -

Re: automobile undercoating that is worth a crap
Thu, June 4, 2009 - 12:38 PMBead blasting. Any media will do but, Beads won't get into the ball joints and what not.
The real thing is to disassemble the whole under carriage. Take the axles and springs, drive shafts out - the works tape up everything you don't want media blast material into ( like your tranny) & tape over your mount points. Media blast it out. Shoot your foam or rubber or whatever you are using and then re assemble.
It'll take you a few days -

Re: automobile undercoating that is worth a crap
Thu, June 4, 2009 - 1:31 PM" A few days " ? Yea....probably , or maybe a few weeks. Ever try to blast over head, or on your back ? Don't do it , it ain't natural, and it's a super pain in the ass. Don't leave out the primer, you can't undercoat on bare steel. But then if there's nothing wrong with the paint in the first place, why strip it ?
Power wash it, make sure it's dry in all of the hidden where evers and what evers,( Let it sit a day or two) and coat away -
