Anyone found a good way to get rid of those tiny little Argentine ants in your place? I have tried ant baits a bunch of times. Most brands don't work, and if they do, they seem to be temporary.

The best I've found for all creepie crawlies is instant quick grits. Dried grains are brought to the queen, her secretions cause her to blow up and the ants move on in seach of new Q and digs. The crawlies have to be able to get the grains so make sure you put them where they will march over the pile/line of grits.

It actually is an old timey bit-o-advise....but it seems to work, and even if they (a different or new colony)come back much later, it works every time for moving the colony yonder.

Thanks, I'll give it a try, as the commercial ant baits don't seem to work.

Fortunately, I actually like grits, so I'll know what to do with the leftovers.

They have to be uncooked! The cooked ones will simply feed them, the dried ones go kah-boom when the ant gets them wet w/secretions....pre wet don't fly, no leftovers for ants.

I've had this same problem, and the ants always come back. We've finally found a product that seems to be making a BIG difference.

Prescription Treatment brand: ADVANCE 375A Select Granular Ant Bait

I found out about it from www.ourwaterourworld.org.

It's less harmful than the toxic pesticides that are sprayed, and it really does the trick!

When I lived in Central California, we had a BIG problem with red ants. They were everywhere...

What I finally learned to do, was to stop killing them. If you kill them, they keep coming back.

I had to be a meticulous housekeeper. With three small children, my kitchen floor had to be carefully swept and mopped, after each meal. My counters had to be wiped immediately and no food could be left out.

In a few weeks, the ants learned that there was no food to be had and they left. :)

They live in my bathroom, too though, and there's nothing to eat in the bathroom. Unless they're living on soap, they keep coming back there too.

I found that baits didn't work, but I got some gel off the internet, max force ant killing gel, from diy pest control.com, and its the only thing that works. It comes in syringes, so you squirt a little gel by where they're coming in and they carry it back to their colony. Within a day they're gone.

boric acid (found at your local drug store) will kill the ones coming into your home, but it still leaves the rest of the colony....... you can sprinckle it all around your house and on window sills, doorways, ect. to keep them from coming in. Works well on roaches too...

The ants and I are in agreement here.....we both hate Orange Glo Wood Cleaner & Polish. The crap stinks and it's greasy as hell. The citrus smell sends em packin. Cut a piece of string to the length that you need it, soak it in the Orange Glo then lay the string out where you see them coming in from. Window sills, under the sink, counter tops, where ever.......then if you're like me and have them wanting to share the tub and shower , just spritz some of it on the faucet and shower head. In the small amounts you use for this method of getting rid of em, its not that stinky. Its doable. There are a couple products out there that will make them split cause the odor messes up their whole gig. Can't recall the other but seem to think it was Windex. *shrug* the oil even smells better then that.

    BLACK PEPPER!
It sounds crazy but it works. It is a little messy but you sprinkle pepper around the area where you see most of them-like around the kitchen cabinets. Leave it for a few days and the ants will be gone. Pepper is really strong especially to something as small as an ant, everyone has it and it is completly safe.

This is an old hillbilly remedy.

Two days later, this seems to be working:

    www.terro.com/index.php

Not sold at grocery stores, but I found it at the local hardware store.

It's a borax/sugar liquid. There's some interesting info on the Argentine ant in particular on the site. Apparently Argentine ant colonies can have many queens, and the colonies can divide, recombine, etc., which is why they're so hard to get rid of.

As I type this, it's the first nice day in months tempwise (Penna). But these flying bugs are in my family room crawling all over the place! We converted our garage into a family room over 12 yrs ago. It seems like the last 5 yrs the bugs have been invading us on the warm days. We have two heat ducts and we covered each of them with a window screen. They are still finding their way in. We also have wall to wall carpet. Obviously they didn't fill in the cracks well in the garage floor or on the wall under the floor. Think all of your suggestions above would get rid of them? I am thinking about adding more topsoil around the house with some gravel in it too. It there are cracks in the stucco, it's got to be under the dirt.
When they come out where they are suppose (outside)there are 100s of them on the side of the house and then they take off.
We really need to find where they are laying their eggs or making their nests. They seem harmless but smell like cheap citrus when we suck them into the vacuum.

    Getting rid of bugs...

A friend of mine moved into a new apartment about 6 months ago.

When he moved in there were no bugs. Then after about a week he started getting ants and other bugs coming out of the baseboards and walls. So here is what he did.
He got some habanero powder and mixed it into a gallon of paint. Then he painted all of the baseboards and molding. Then in the corners, behind the stove and refer he sprinkled some of the powder.
Not a bug one since he did that. Cool huh?

      Habanero peppers? Makes sense.

I actually have some around. I might try grinding them up in the blender, then mixing them into caulk.

I could kick my husband in the butt (or lower!) I went outside and in the front of the buggie room there was a rock that was laying near the wall and there was a huge hole in the ground under the rock. Now the driveway use to go all the way up to the house. I didn't want that anymore. My husband knocked out a huge hunk of the drive. He didn't seal anything underneath where the house and ground met. Don't ever assume people will think to do things. And it's been 5 yrs of bugs now. He's getting some cement over the weekend to finish the job. Maybe no more bugs. Crossing fingers.

That is cool! But habenero's sure are hot... I once used one pepper in a gallon of stew. It was way too spicy for anyone to eat! Don't get it near your eyes or any mucous membrane. Use rubber gloves if you have them...

      What a great idea!

I had them real bad last summer. They were coming up through the carpet and anywere else they could find a way in. I tryed everything and the one thing that worked was from combat it looks like a saringe (ok I know I did not spell that right). As soon as I put it out the ants made a bee line for it. Like in 10 seconds. They were dead the next day. I do have pets so I just used it around the ceiling and were my pets could not reach it. ]

        Hope this helps.

Its all about the DE... Thats diatomaceous earth... I have used here at the BM ranch to remove massive amounts of ants from areas I have camped. Basically you spready it around the mound, and that works fast. In the case of a house, its handy to spready it around the permiter of your house. Or spread it near the places that they get into the house, inside cabinets, etc. How it works is ants have an exoskeleton in which when they walk across the DE the skeleton gets sliced up, making them dry out or bleed to death. It doest take long for them to figure it out, and leave the area. DE is also used in pool filters, however that type does not work the same. DE is natural, its crushed fossils basically, Pool filter DE is more of a rolled DE, not crushed, so it doesnt have the same abrasion factor. Check it out..

Give coffee grounds a try. New or used doesn't matter, just sprinkle them where the ants are and see if it helps. It's supposed to keep ants and other small chewing type bugs at bay. I've tried it in my veggie garden and have had great results protecting my seedlings from attack. Good luck

I'm breathing life into this old thread simply because my newish apartment has become a winter mecca to hungry ants. I'm going to try a sweet bait of boric acid, jelly and peanut butter stuffed in straws per the BugMan's suggestion [ www.fagerlund.addr.com/ants.htm ] and leave the straw bait outside my apt. and under it. If the tactic works, I'm going to suggest this to my building neighbors. Our landlord suggested I bomb the crawl space under my apt. but I'm not into poisoning me and my cats right now.

I'll second that diatomaceous earth suggestion. Works great and it's cheap, to boot!

You can usually find 'ant chalk' in asian food stores and such....

On the ant chalk, I was looking at a Berkeley, CA, website today, doing research on ants and chalk since someone else suggested I try chalk. Some parents on the site posted warnings about using Chinese chalk. Apparently the stuff is laced with poisons toxic to children (incl. lead) and supposedly has been outlawed in California.

i haven't actually tried this myself (read it after the ant season had faded here in my home) but i read somewhere that talc - baby powder - sprinkled around doorway, windows, entry-points will keep the ants out. maybe worth a try? non-toxic. hey, if it doesn't keep the ants out, at least it'll still smell nice!

We used to get those Argentinian ants in our apartment, too. They were in the bathroom, with the trail ending -- in the TOILET TANK!!! They were swimming over to the ball float and hanging out there. My only guess is that they liked the mineral deposits from the hard water.

Anyway, we made a mixture of borax and powdered sugar, mixed it with crushed up hard cat food (that they had found and LOVED!), and put it in a 1 lb butter container. Then, we poked holes around the sides, as close to the lid as possible to keep it all stable, then turned it upside down behind our fridge. It took a couple of days, but they found it, loved it, and took it back to the colony. A week or so later, no more ants!

Oh, I wanted to say that, if you can find the colony, pour BOILING water in it, and it will kill the queen. They can swim, so you're not drowning them -- you're BOILING them!

Have ya tried Boric Acid solutions? There are a variety, I prefer the ones sold at Agway.

Also the potential for a trip to canada may be in order. I believe they still sell Chloradane there.

      > Anyone found a good way to get rid of those tiny little Argentine ants in your place?

The Terro that you have found is the only product that keeps them away.
I also mix boric acid and cheap syrup to make my own bait. Argentine ants don't like fat-based baits, they like sweets.
Basically there is NO WAY to destroy the colony (I'll keep the explanation short) because:
      1) they have many queens
      2) they are not aggressive toward other colonies, so they merge to form super colonies.
However, you can control them and keep them away from your stuff.

My old boss used to make these poison traps that she swore by.

Get a PVC drain cover (or vent, maybe? looks like a cap with slits on the end), about 4 inch diameter, and a PVC cap to either fit around it or inside it. Mix a solution of dextrose water (or other sugar water) and boric acid powder, pour some in the cap and cover with the drain cover. The ants that drink from it will take the poison back to the nest. The drain cover was basically so she could put them where necessary without risking harm to her dogs and cats.

I found these sites on a brief google search. Only skimmed them, but they seemed to have a variety of ideas, and info on ants in general...

As a repellant, I use mint oil spray. It is sold as a pesticide, or at least a repellent, in a yellow spray can. It is supposedly nontoxic to people and pets, which makes sense because it is mint out. But I guess ants don't dig it. Yes, it doesn't kill the colony. But strategic spraying can keep them out of your house.

uh, I would throw that sucker out. How would you reach the areas under the vents to clean the spray off?
It sounds alot toxic to me cause when it starts to heat up it will be infusing ant killer with whatever is in there.
Maybe one of the experienced in here can give you directions for removing panels and working with microwaves.

My landlord swears by cinnamon. I have not tried it, although I have some ants in my garage that might become test subjects.

I guess you can sprinkle it everywhere, or just around the opening. Something about it they just don't like.

hey... a friend of mine told me about cinnamon before. I sprinkled that in a trail, across where they seemed to be coming from, and it solved the problem. I used to have a HUGE problem with ants, and don't anymore.
  • Re: Ants

    Thu, February 9, 2006 - 2:10 PM
So I tried the BugMan's sweet bait of 3 parts peanut butter, 2 parts jelly, and 1 tbs boric acid. Mixed the goo in an unwashed empty can of cat food. Then cut up straws. Since the straws were skinny (whatever hapened to big straws? anyway got 'em free at Wendy's), just stabbed them into the bait and placed the baited straws outside and through the crawl space wire meshes. Then I left the can on top of the kitchen cabinet, as I thought the ants were coming up from some hole behind the kitchen cabinet.

And then thousands upon thousands of ants marched single file into my apartment. But not from the supposed hole behind the kitchen cabinet. They were coming from the crevice between the new oak flooring and the wall baseboard in my bedroom. This same wall on the other side has the kitchen cabinets affixed to it. Since I wanted the bait to work, I squelched the urge to wipe the little buggers out with a hot soapy wash cloth. Since they were coming in so strong and seemingly unaffected by the bait, I decided to make up a smaller batch, adding just a little more boric acid, and placing it along the trail in my bedroom. At one point, hundreds of foraging ants left the trail to explore my kitchen floor twice. Which in the early a.m. and with the kitchen light on, turned out to be a real drag. So after cleaning up the floor the second time, I sprinkled some old Johnson's Baby Powder around the perimeter of the kitchen floor. That seemed to keep the ants from the floor.

Now, a week after I started the experiment, the ants have all but disappeared from my apt. Nice to wake up and find that the steady stream has stopped. Still get a few scouts (like two at a time) checking out the kitchen countertops. Would like to sweep up the baby powder. But will leave it on the floor for at least a few more weeks. The floor crevice I'll caulk soon.
