Shingling a dog house

The roof of my dog house is one half sheet of plywood (at an angle to shed water.) I was thinking about shingling it with your basic three tab asphalt shilgles. Would I need to put tar paper under the shingles?

The main reason I was going to use shingles was to keep the dog from chewing up the edges. However, I know he would like to lay up there and then the asphalt shingles don't sound like such a good idea... any alternative ideas out there?

Plywood is fairly cheap -- let him chew it up. ;-)

But, if you really want to cover it, how about just putting a 2x4 around the edges (underneath the plywood, long way down) so it is too thick for him to get his jaws around an edge? Then, if you are worried about water damage, paint the top or use thompson's water seal. Just an idea.

Use 70 pound mineral fent. It's cheap and works well.
It's eacy to replace. You should get a bout 8- 10 years from it unlessyou abuse it.
If you paper under that's all the better. It's a dog house. Keep that in mind.
    Dogs have fur.

I build a house ( a really nice one) for a dog owned by my wife's aunt in Bangor Maine. The damn dog refused to sleep in it cause it was too hot in the winter.
WINTER the da,mn dog was too hot?? Yes. I opened it up, pulled the insulation out and yanked the rug and thereafter the damn dog loved it.

No insulation in this baby. It is double walled though. 1/2 plywood on the outside, 1/4 hardboard on the inside.

Not sure what mineral fent is... didn't have any luck Google-ing it either.

We shingled our dog house and it took the two dogs about one week to tear most of the roofing shingles off, once they start they have fun doing it. We wanted a nice looking dog house but the dogs thought it was a toy, so better to use plywood and keep it painted with deck paint.

Deck paint vs. regular exterior house paint... is there a major difference if he's just gonna be chewing on it?

Another option would be to coat it wdith corragated steel. It would give you good water protection. A high level of reflectivity <keeps it cooler in the summer> and good durability. Plus the dog likely won't be too happy with laying on it as he will slide.

Only problem would be the edges are sharp. I would dado out a 2x2 and frame it around the edges to protect them.

See, I don't mind if he sits up there. That's kinda why I was leaning away from shingles. Now to convince the wife he'll tear it up either way...
