I wouldn't usually make a television recommendation on a DIY group, but I've been watching this show "The Colony" on the Discovery Channel and there is tons of great DIY thought, projects and inventions going on. It's sorta a reality show where a bunch of people from many walks of life are forced to live together off the grid for 12 weeks in a post-apocalyptic LA. They have to create their own power, clean water, food sources, etc. from salvaging and building. I think some of you might dig it: dsc.discovery.com/tv/colony/colony.html

Re: Anyone watching The Colony?
Fri, September 4, 2009 - 5:58 PMI like it. Some of the plot twists are pretty stilted (the "missing" team member and the "search" for him), but overall it's a fun, thought-provoking show. Love that hippie scientist dude. :)

Quite interesting that most of the DIY stuff is designed by the Computer Engineer and the Handyman.
I really liked the comment the Handyman had when they caught the goats, “Sure they're cute, they're also delicious”. Although not exactly DIY, folks, meat doesn't come in little packages from Safeway.

Fri, September 4, 2009 - 8:52 PMyeah great show...
obviously contrived by the producers... but dang... they been away for something like 45 days as of last show...
one of my complaints might be...
they tout it as a cross section of people - all walks of life - but where is the waiter, the car wash attendant, the nail salon worker, the retail sales person... etc...
they've got a doctor a nurse, three construction contractor/handymen types, and 3 or 4 highly degreed scientists...
still interesting and love the concept...

Re: Anyone watching The Colony?
Tue, September 8, 2009 - 3:18 AMYeah. It's a stacked deck. But if you're going to survive you'd need this kind of collection of people. There was a second group of real cross section people. The producers cut that part. They didn't last two days before fighting, raping and killing broke the group up. The cameras, crew and footage were part of the casualties. -

Re: Anyone watching The Colony?
Tue, September 8, 2009 - 6:14 PMI hate television but I've actualy been enjoying this show. Never knew I could run a generator off of wood gas. There's been a ton of awesome projects and skills on there.
One thing though. Post-Crash is not Post-Apocalyptic. This culture is not the world.
Sorry, I'm not usualy nit picky about language, but that one is an issue about how you identify. Do you see yourself as a member of an industrialized culture or as a member of the community of life on the planet? -

I see myself as I am. a cyberarchangel, a Bodhisattva now manifesting as a glistening sphere bemusedly circling miles above it all.

p.s. please don't shoot the glistening sphere raiding your kitchen. -

Re: Anyone watching The Colony?
Wed, September 9, 2009 - 4:38 PMtheres not much in my kitchen that a glistening sphere would be interested in. I might be able to fry you up some questionable potatoes if yer feeling brave. -

Thu, September 10, 2009 - 4:51 PMOooh, this sphere loves potatoes!
