ANTS!!!!

topic posted Mon, May 5, 2008 - 1:43 PM by  Vaudie-slam...
Here's my dilema:
I live in a huge warehouse with many rooms, unknown and mysterious cracks and crevices and holes, large openings into walls and under doors and cabinets, and many other places ants like to crawl into...
Patching up these cracks/crevices/holes/openings would be way too much work, and pretty much impossible because there are so many, and the ants seem to be coming from outside and inside in every direction. This has been an ongoing problem since we have been occupying the place, and I'm sick of it!
I need a pet and kid friendly way to get rid of, or at least cut down on the number of these ants! Please help!

Aren't there some kind of lizards that eat ants?

What is the ant magnet? They are after something.

You can exterminate whole colonies with boric acid solution mixed with whatever they like Ants tend to like either sweet or greases.
Boric acid is harmless to people and other mammals. It is lethal on insect biology tho.
Pyrethrines are fairly harmless to people also. They operate at the sodium ion exchange in the insect nervous system. They are lethal for fish and other cold blooded animals. tinyurl.com/6qkdsj

Very fine powder gets all up and in their breathing and functions. .... mix fineground confectioner's sugar with borax or pyrethrines or commercial ant powder.... make a perimeter at their known pathways so they'll have to step in it, but they'll find it anyway because of the sugar. Key is that they take the bait back to the queen. The queen is cached deep. She dies, the colony is gone. Otherwise it goes on.

Borax won't harm pets or kids...just tastes shitty... but lethal to insects. Pyrethrin toxic to all so pyrethrin -soaked sugar bait needs to be kept in little box traps with small holes for ant access only. .... like a small sealed box you can make, with two holes... put up or taped up where toddlers can't reach.

We've had a major infestation with ants...they were even sneaking out of the nail holes where pictures were hung. Our local pest control guy gave me a tube of "Uncle Albert's Super Smart Ant Bait". The writing is so small on the tube, I can't tell you what's in it. But whenever I found a trail, I put a spot or two in the path. The ants take the bait back to the colony - and bye-bye. It's taken a while as several colonies had invaded our home - but we've been ant-free for several weeks now.

The company that makes this stuff = Green Star Group, Hutchins, TX

I'd say use the boric acid as an overall ant-killer and use this stuff wherever you find them trailing as back-up.

I just checked out the website for the *Uncle Albert's*......environmentally safe, virtually non-toxic to pets & humans

Use your kid's blackboard or sidewalk chalk to draw a 1/2 thick line - Ants won't cross it . I used this when the dog's food bowl was overrun by ants. Kid's chalk is generally calcium sulfate (gypsum).

We had a major ant problem in our house when I was growing up. Whenever my mom would find an ant trail, she's put the kettle on and pour the boiling water over them. She swore she could hear them scream, and it was very gratifying. I don't blame her- they're ruined lots of our food and our pet's food. We had to float the pet food bowl in a larger bowl of water (like a moat) just to keep them out. Don't leave any food out (except butter. They never swarmed our butter for some reason)!!!

You will have to use poison. This means keeping clear of your work until the ants are extinct. Go to the hardware store such as Lowes and get the powder type poison. The ants carry it in their hole and it gets all the ants somehow. It is sure to work. Then, sweep up real good. Work on the openings later.

Well that's rather defeatest isn't it? I think i'd try some of the natural cures first. The major thing you must do is make sure that they cannot access any of your food. If ants can get at your food they will keep coming back.

I use the boiling water method. This time of year the ants seem to swarm around the opening of the nest. When i see this going on, i put on a pot of water and once it's boiling i pour it on the ants making sure to get a lot down the hole. I use the same method for eliminating weeds that grow up in the cracks of the sidewalk. So far we haven't had any ant problems at our house.

National Geographic says there are 16,000 different species. Some nest pretty close to the surface, and that boiling water trick might work on those little ones.. Then again, there are many other larger kinds where the queen's throneroom/egg-laying chamber is a safe meter under. No way water's going to penetrate that deep. Alls you do splashing hot water is kill off some infertile female workers... of which the queen lays thousands of eggs daily to replace, as they're anyway quite dispensable.

By the way, if you don't have any boric acid around to mix with the confectioner's sugar, then you can use Boraxo hand cleaner powder. Boric acid is derived from borax. I think powdered gypsum, as from drywall, or talc as from talcum powder, or white lime as from the hardware store, might work too, Thing is to get the worker girls to take it back to that big old egg-laying queen... make lines of the baited powder mix crossing where they like to go. Once she's done for your problem will be soooo over.

        b!

You could try vinegar. Pouring or spraying vinegar around the perimeter would steer them to go in the opposite direction. The chalk suggestion works too. Poison is never a wise solution and killing them is kinda mean - just my opinion. Best to make sure that you keep your areas free of crumbs and things they'd like to eat though that may be difficult with children around.

At some point or other, just as a kind of science experiment, I'd tried many things on my harvester ants out on the porch, including spent motor oil, concentrated urine (outside), vinegar, etc, etc. Ants are particularly tenacious...and as I've said, killing a few workers doesn't keep that mob down for long. NO, the only final solution is powder brought to the queen...

Powder of borax or lime or gypsum or talc is NOT perforce a "poison" but it works in a manner similar to suffocation.

In the natural world there is often competitiion for food. As soon as vermin goes after me, or my food, they then threaten my health and well-being. There's a difference between being humane,... and being stupid.

Well, put the ant traps where the dogs and pets aint. you might consider calling a professional exterminator, yep , that might be best.

Is there any upside to having those little sugar ants around that anyone is aware of?

Yeah, they taste pretty good. The American natives were big consumers of insects. The formic acid in many ants is a surprisingly tasty spice. And ants contain alot of other nutrients. So you could use the unwholesome, anti-nutritious refined white sugar ("White Death") as bait to lure a bunch of ants to where they could be harvested as food.

The other thing is that ants are very helpful in breaking down waste and remains back into soil.....and in aerating soil.

      It all works together somehow.

Wash all your surfaces with a peppermint soap. I use Dr. Bronner's. Dust known cracks with cinnamon. You can make a neat-o bait box with honey and boric acid-if you have a yard?
Keep EVERYTHING in airtight containers until the ant problem is gone. If the scouts aren't finding food, their buddies won't come.

Buy some cheap ground cinnamon at a dollar store. Sprinkle it around where you see them. Leave it down for awhile until you don't see them any more. I tried this in my kitchen and it worked!
