I'm trying to help a friend with making a motion in some burning man art.. it needs to be small, lightweight but pretty powerful and power-able by battery. So if we can find some small ones out of junked stuff.. or stuff around the house that would be great.

Re: Whats the smallest electrical engine
Fri, July 3, 2009 - 8:11 AMThere are zillions of little motors that do things ranging from moving the hands of a watch to cock motors and little inch diameter motors that spin little fans galore. -

those are teensie tiny...
hhmm.. well the man is trying to create sperm (football sized or a little bigger) that wiggle and have motion and maybe have light inside to make them night art alive with evolving DNA you can see his diagram on the crafty vixens tribe.. -

Cliff, Do you personally have experience with " Cock" motors ? Did you have to use little fans to cool it ? :-) -

Re: Whats the smallest electrical engine
Sun, July 5, 2009 - 7:43 AMAlthough these are probably a bit small for your application these are very small: “The World's Smallest Motor” <www.livescience.com/technolo...tor.html> -

Sun, July 5, 2009 - 11:53 AMCheap stuff you you can use:
Pager motors, very small, 1V to 5V, remove the weight to use:

A bit bigger and probably more appropriate to your project:

Re: Whats the smallest electrical engine
Thu, July 9, 2009 - 2:13 AMThese are seriously great little motors.
If get a bunch of 12V motors, I guess a simple variable resistor in line from a 12V battery would regulate speed adequately? Or would the variable resistor heat up i time?
I took basic high school electronics but it's been decades now. -

Fri, July 10, 2009 - 11:16 PMheat up... oh my we could have sperm torches.. Cook Bacon Naked is the artist of said project.. I have no clue about electric only that if not grounded it can be very painful..

It would be better to use a PWM circuit to control the speed, with the resistor you will lose torque.
Just a suggestion, may be you can find cheaper kits:

Re: Whats the smallest electrical engine
Tue, July 14, 2009 - 10:53 AMAnother alternative is to use gearbox + motor (if speed has to be fixed)
