diy hearth pad

i just installed a wood stove but would like to make a custom hearth pad. i know one way is to start with plywood then 1/2 in. cement board then the ceramic tile. anyone have any more specific info on the procedure for this? what type of adhesive and/or other supplies would i need? other methods? thanks. george

    Adhering the stone / tile to the cement backer board ( or that compressed silica glass fiber) can be done using thinset. It's a masonry product so the heat won't harm it.
    Affixing the backer board to the ply is done with screws. I'd not use an adhesive between the plywood and the backer board cause the heat will make it outgas and smell.
