Tweaky toilet

The toilet at Beloved's house scares me.

He bought the house 3 years ago. It has a new low-water toilet, but I think something is very wrong with it. You have to hold the handle down in order to get it to flush, instead of the usual push and let go. And when it flushes, the water gets up to almost the top of the rim before it goes down.

I had him try pouring water from a bucket into the toilet bowl...it works fine that way...the water went right down and didn't do the almost-flooding thing.

He said he tried cleaning out the holes under the rim, but he said they were pretty clear.

Any ideas why the toilet is doing this?

Thanks.

    In order of probability:

✔ The chain that pulls the flapper valve up may be improperly adjusted . That is it's the wrong length: too short & too long will both cause that just in different ways.

✔ The flapper valve may have a buoyancy control chamber that is either leaky or plugged

In either event it's not a big deal either as a repair or to ignore.

So does that mean that the flapper isn't opening enough to let the water out fast enough to go down the way it should?

If not, what are the mechanics of what might be wrong?

      Thanks.

        Not necessarily.

If the lift chain is too long it might just cause the flapper to hit the back extreme of it's range of motion and bounce back in the hole. If too shirt it might not allow it to get high enough to avoid being sucked back down into the hole
'Either way the result is that you gotta hold the handle while the fuck cycles or it'll drop back.

And then there's different kinds of flappers.
Some have a little float that keeps 'em up while the fluch cycles.
Some have a little tank with a small hole in 'em. That tank is full of water which causes the flapper to be heavy on the leeward side of the flap. This causes the flap to remain upright until the water flows out the little hole at which point the balance shifts and the flapper falls back in place.
        Others are naturally buoyant.

Ya gotta pop the top off and watch the action to determine whether to give the chain more or less slack.

yes, that is the problem basically. his bowl fills way up because the onrush of fresh water isn't forceful enough to empty the bowl.
