Buy n a Car

Hello fellow and lady do-it yourselfers.
First off, let me explain that I did do a google search and I also searched our archives, My
score was limp.
I would like from any here, an Auto inspection pocket guide. Essentially, a link to same guide, or a point by point check list of things I should and can check myself by external
viewing of a Used car (prospective purchase) and things to look for with an "under
the hood" and test drive assessment.
Also, while doing these checks and fillling out my list, notes to make of things that
would need checking by a qualified and certified mechanic for further scrutiny of
the auto I am considering for purchase.
Many time, in looking for a car, I have set up an inspection by an authorized and certified
mechanic only to have him find something that I would have found had I done a thorough
inspection using a check list, but missed because I was trying to house all the info in
my head while sizing up the seller, the car and my own emotions.
So, a checklist of things to check, what different conditions would mean, good or bad,
what those conditions would indicate for more intensive inspection.
and some scoring system so I have an idea of how an individual car sizes up
in comparison to others I have viewed and also a scoring to let me measure how
the car should be priced (ie, is the asking price over board or spot on?).

I will be using this guide and passing it on to my ex-wife's son, so please provide something I can e-mail in some understandable form I can use and not have to
coach more than a reasonable amount with. Time is running out for me.

Thanks tribers,
Randy

Your being a non-mechanic, I can't imagine what good a " check list" would do you. You would have to have at least a basic understanding of the how's and why's of automobiles to use it. And if you had that ability , you wouldn't need the check list in the first place. Which would explain the lack of them on the web.
Apart from the obvious things , like, odd noised, smells, clunks and squeaks. Check all fluid levels, and check the tires for ANY uneven wear. That would indicate a steering, alignment, or suspension problem.
You stated that the mach. found simple things that you could have found. You didn't realize the he didn't find anything wrong with other things that only he was qualified to examine, giving you the ok on them. It doesn't cost any more or less to let them do the entire inspection sooo. you should have someone qualified inspect it any way, since you basically don't know what you're doing "under the hood".
If you still want a list, go to one of those dealers that offers a check list with every car ( Car Max ?) and get a list from them . But that won't make you, "Max Worthy" ;-)

prolly best you take it to a good mechanic and just pay him to give it a good going over . Just pay him what he wants.

Cars today are more complex than ever and if you are not already up to speed you are taking your financial life in your hands with them.

This all means you better narrow your search down to one or two top picks.

Cause god knows if you ain't buyin' new it'll be because you can't.

Try to stick with the tried and tested models: Anything from Toyota or Honda may be a good shot so long as it ain't beat and has low mileage.

Try not to buy a car from a person who is not the original owner.

I am a BMW fan but there is no cheap BMW that's worth owning.
