I saw the post on Bamboo, and rather than feed a 3 year old post, thought I'd start a new topic.
You see, I'm thinking of planting bamboo. But want to make sure I don't run into the "never able to remove it" category. Or maybe there's another quick growing alternative to a privacy fence.
I am in the process of putting in a retaining wall in my back yard. Should be done in a month or two. My neighbors lot is at a much higher elevation than mine, and being the dirty fuckers they are, they just love to pee on their back fence (and often will try and make small talk with me over the fence while they do). They also have a laundry line they hang over the back of the fence over my yard to dry their clothes on.
So in a passive aggressive way, I want to shut them out, get more privacy, but they may resist because it will block their elevated view of east oakland. But I have no problem with being more aggressive than passive.
My back wall is 6 feet high, then there's about 4 feet of dirt, then another 3 foot tall wall, and a 4 foot tall fence on top of that. It's this ledge/terrace I want to plant bamboo or some other privacy barrier. But I want to make sure the bamboo won't go down 6 feet, and go under the wall and start growing in my yard. And as much as I dislike my neighbors, I just want to shut them out, not have bamboo grow down 2 feet, under that wall, and up through 3 feet of dirt and start growing in their yard...
Suggestions?

Re: Privacy planting
Fri, May 9, 2008 - 3:04 PMbamboo is maybe not your answer, since Oakland's view laws would make you responsible for anything that grows into your neighbor's view that you planted, plus bamboo may suck for you too if you want to do anything with your garden later. there are other plants that create screening- a trip to the nursery with a list of your sun & soil factors might be a good start - but one suggestion is Pittosporum tenuifolium, a great evergreen tree screen that grows very fast without being invasive at all.
as far as your neighbors peeing on your fence - wtf??- and hanging laundry over onto your property--- welllll there is an ordinance in Oakland that prevents the laundry thing, and that is YOUR property (your side of the actual fence) so you could have the city cite them. Or you could just start peeing on their laundry that hangs over to your side, I mean it may start a pissing contest, but whatever, all's fair..... -

Fri, May 9, 2008 - 3:07 PMI don't know how fast they grow. But you could plant some old fashioned very thorny blackberries. -

Re: Privacy planting
Fri, May 9, 2008 - 3:16 PMWould need to grow about 10 feet tall.
One thing I was thinking of doing, is putting in a trellace. They already have alot of Ivy growing in one area, and I can just train their Ivy to grow up on the trellace. And didn't realize there was such a thing as a law obstructing the view in Oakland. Will have to research that. I do know alot of cities, such as SF, have laws saying that you can not block the light, but says nothing about the view.

Re: Privacy planting
Fri, May 9, 2008 - 3:31 PMFound the view ordinance for Oakland. Apparently, it only applies to trees planted after 1980. Nothing in there about other plants, or even structures. Just trees..... Of course, doesn't mean they couldn't just reach over the fence and chop down whatever I plant. Which is why I was thinking bamboo...
And I figure, they need the privacy more than I do. It's not me using the back of my property as an outhouse after all. Wonder if there's an ordinance against peeing outside in Oakland.

Re: Privacy planting
Fri, May 9, 2008 - 3:39 PMSounds like the neighborhood needs some cleaning up.
Entrap them. Figure a way for a child of tender years to be in just the right place to see them waggling their genitals as they pee.
Then call the police and have them carted off as sex offenders.

Re: Privacy planting
Fri, May 9, 2008 - 3:58 PMOh, this neighborhood needs lots of cleanup. For starts, I think there are about 12 of them who live in a 3 bedroom house. Which is why the men often choose to do their business outside rather than indoors. I personally have nothing against this. When I lived out in the deep woods, we'd often pee outside rather than inside to save water costs.
And the neighborhood is starting to clean up some. In fact, they found a guy about 2 blocks away who had tried to bury a couple hundred gallons of paint and paint thinner in his back yard. They've been working on cleaning that up lately.
Ya, it's a dirty neighborhood. And it's crowded. I just want to create my own secluded little spot so I can do my thing, and don't have to see anyone else do their thing. Out of site, out of mind.
