Can anyone help me? I want to wire up 6 LEDS in total, 4 of them are white at 3.6v, 20ma, 2 of them are red at 2.1v, 20ma. I want to wire it to my car battery which gives out 14.4v. and if possible a 12v neon trim all together. That a total of 30.6v that it needs. Is there any way I can do this.

Thu, May 22, 2008 - 6:45 AMOK I'll bite. Some one called my attention to this thread.
I hadn't looked at it as I don't know nuthin about wiring LEDs but, this post raises another issue about which I know nuthin.
How exactly does one search prior threads? Where is the search facility?
Tribe's is broke and they won't fix it.
So how do you do it~? -

Re: How to wire 6 different leds
Thu, May 22, 2008 - 6:32 PMCliff, it used to work (searching TRIBE) and then it didn't for quite a while - but I do believe the search function has been repaired and seems to work pretty well.
There are two search fields on each tribe's page. If you use the 2nd field down you will be searching your local tribe.
For example, this is the result I get when I type LED in the 2nd search field:
www.google.com/cse
But, the reason I brought this posting to your attention is that I didn't understand how Dion's question deserved such a "Fuck. .... you." reply.
Most of us have made the mistake of asking a question before searching for an answer.
And as you point out, "Tribe's is broke and they won't fix it. " - you and many others probably don't realize that the search feature does actually work now.
I hadn't been to the DIY tribe for awhile (busy starting a new job - as a maintenance guy - no less).
I was disappointed to see Dion get such a nasty, rude reply to a simple question; direct him to use search, by all means.
But to tell him "Fuck. ... you." is way out of line (imo).

just fill in the blanks and you get a wiring diagram with needed resistor size.
i knew zilch about em when i came asking here on the DIY tribe.
Extremely grateful to a few who really helped out.
check out photos on my profile.
they all worked out with great success and more to come!!!!!

I rather suspect he was just being a gleeful smart ass not really intending any harm. In fact I somewhat doubt that he is actually aware of any prior thread on point.

Fri, May 23, 2008 - 10:05 AMRead the whole thing a few months back.
and to blueberry, to belabor this whole sidetrack:
."Doesn't matter the fact is you were unnecessarily rude."
sure, a little bit. As to unnecessary; maybe. But some folks seem to think "DIY" means "lazy - spoonfeed me" which to me seems to completely betray the spirit of "DIY." Nothing wrong with with a swat on the ass. -

wait...
all etiquette discussions aside...I ain't the mostest smartest with electronics...
but... is the basic math on this right?
wiring in a series doesn't require greater *voltage* does it? it just draws more amps...
right?
wrong? -

Re: How to wire 6 different leds
Sun, May 25, 2008 - 5:51 AMWiring in series does require greater voltage.
If there is exactly one round trip path for current through all the components in a circuit, then the entire voltage drop of the battery is shared over those components. If you have a 3V battery and an LED that requires 3V to operate, you can connect them directly and the LED will power on. If you instead connect two leds, in series, to the battery, then each LED only gets 1.5V of the total 3V battery - so neither LED gets enough voltage to turn on. If the two leds are connected in parallel (so there are now two round trip current paths through the circuit) then the two leds each get 3V to themselves and they will both turn on, assuming the battery can output enough current for two LEDs.

Tue, May 27, 2008 - 11:33 AMI would think, read as much print on the stuff as you can to determine.
