Re: Finished a D-I-Y project
Wed, November 4, 2009 - 12:54 PMI musta missed something... like maybe your previus posts about your project?
What is it?
Looks like a demo of the piston & rod drive system for an external-combustion (say, steam?) engine machine.
Please spill: what are these units about?

Re: Finished a D-I-Y project
Thu, November 5, 2009 - 10:11 AMIs there some sort of battery or something in the cylinder? I see a crank, or a couple of them. Does it charge something? Like those flashlights and radios that one cranks?

Re: Finished a D-I-Y project
Thu, November 5, 2009 - 1:14 PMGo with your first idea of having them as X-mas gifts.
Although displaying a high degree of craftsmanship, these are oibviously useless --- but would add alot to home decor.
You wouldn't want to keep more than one yourself for over the mantlepiece.

Fri, November 6, 2009 - 12:42 PMNice looking.
I get that they are piston machines of some sort but I haven't quite made out what they do.

Sat, November 7, 2009 - 10:22 AMWe have discussed Steamboat Ed.
We think Steamboat Ed has too much spare time on his hands.
We think Steamboat Ed should get busy making clever wooden toys for needy African children this holiday season. -

Re: Finished a D-I-Y project
Tue, November 10, 2009 - 9:42 AMIn a spectrum of harsh to mildly titillated, consensus is difficult of attainment.
So one voices majority sentiment.
Hope no one has a problem with that. -

Re: Finished a D-I-Y project
Tue, November 10, 2009 - 9:55 AMwtf briggi? who needs consensus here?! I don't need you or anyone else to speak for me here or in person, nor am I ever much part of a majority sentiment. *we each* have opinions, that's why *we each* share on this forum, as individuals, not as your self-proscribed "one."
steamboat ed -- little did you know your well-crafted (?!) wooden motor thingamajigs would cause such a stir. or perhaps you did...? -

Re: Finished a D-I-Y project
Sat, November 14, 2009 - 7:53 PM--Have been busy elsewhere; back now. The story is this design came from a very neat book (now out of print) called "Making Mechanical Marvels in Wood".
--This particular mechanism illustrates the relative movements of piston and valve in a locomotive-type steam engine. There's a hand crank to make it go round and there's an extension of the hand crank shaft on the back of the display so that it can be coupled to an electric motor to make it do its thing, although I've yet to make this conversion to one of the engines.
--Am currently job hunting so one of 'em will travel with me for show-and-tell; the rest are going to old friends.

Re: Finished a D-I-Y project
Wed, November 11, 2009 - 12:19 AMHuh? If we knowed dude was posessed we'd a thunk it too!!!
I said it before and I'll say it again. A number of us looked at Steamboat Ed's work and felt he could do better things with his talent.
Steamboat Ed is free to refute or challenge or add to this opinion that a number of us have.
Those on this forum with other or contrary views, continue to have the right to express that.
But if somebody wants to get off by defeating my right to tell what some of us think, then the devil take you. ("WTF?") What in Hell is this forum worth if a person is not free to speak freely?
Maybe Pogo comics said it best:
" Calm down you li'l sprat afore mammy forgit she a gentlemint...The tads tole me last week that it was Easter so I dress up like a 'ol bunny an' gits 'em some eggs..." -- Walt Kelly, 1950

Wed, November 11, 2009 - 12:32 AM>A number of us looked at Steamboat Ed's work and felt he could do better things with his talent.
Where? In this thread? What I see is a number of folks saying, and I'll paraphrase, if I may - "nice work, but what are they?". I don't see "you could do better things with your talent" coming from anyone other than you. Were you having this discussion somewhere else?
And, of course, you're correct, we all have the freedom to express our own opinions. You, however, do not have the freedom to express my opinion...unless I say to you "Briggi - this is my opinion: <insert opinion here>. Please express it for me as my proxy. Thank you"
Steamboat Ed - nice work! I enjoyed seeing the photos of your progress on flickr. I hope whoever receives one of these appreciates the hard work you put into their creation!
Cheers!

Re: Finished a D-I-Y project
Wed, November 11, 2009 - 1:01 AMSuppose I told you that me expressing your opinion for you is a piece of work that is pretty much disinteresting for me?
Yes there was communication on Steamboat Ed's project outside of this forum.
Save your righteous indignation for when I'm talking at You.

Nice.
And as for You expressing my opinion for Me - I'm happy to hear of Your disinterest.

Mon, November 16, 2009 - 7:39 AM***********Yes there was communication on Steamboat Ed's project outside of this forum.***********
So he is to be condemned here?
I think not.
I ( for one) was not privy to these other matters that arose elsewhere.
If you and Eddie have bad feelings that's fine.
It's not the business of this tribe to be the place to settle other scores that arose elsewhere under other circumstances, wouldn't you agree?

Re: Finished a D-I-Y project
Mon, November 16, 2009 - 7:33 AM***********A number of us looked at Steamboat Ed's work and felt he could do better things with his talent. *************
It strikes me as more than a little bit hubristic to ridicule and condemn a person on the theory that you think he can do better.
Maybe that's what pleases him.
And who is to say what some one should be doing with their time?
It'd be one thing to say "Hay dude you are so talented you could be building spaceships"
It's another to be mean and hurtful just because what he did does not meet your expectations.
And then there is the art for art's sake thing.
An artist - a fine artist - does not have practical constraints on his or her art.
In fact a great many fine artists will reject any effort that has a practical value calling it not art but craft.
Not mind you that they are repudiating the idea of craft but rather that they see a dividing line, sort of like that line that divided carrots from potatoes. Both have their place but it's foolish to call one by the same identifier as the other.
Maybe Eddie makes wooden and metal thing-a-ma-bobs that accomplish nothing other than to be beautiful and entertaining..
Is art not a valid DIY endeavor? Why must Eddie buy his art from some one else when he is fully capable of making beauty for himself?
I applaud his effort.
It does not have to screw a top on a canning jar, or power his swamp cooler. It doesn't need to help him hook his trailer to his truck. It does not have to do anything other than what he intended, and clearly he intended beauty.
They are quite lovely in my eye.
I just don't understand the hostility with which you have greeted his effort.
Have you and eddie exchanged insults in the past and your current tone now reflects the remaining anger you feel over things past?
