Sawzall

I have an AEG sabre saw I inherited. The model is SSPE 800. The Mach no. is 269621. I would like to use it, but I cannot figure out how to change the blade. This does not have quick release anything. There are three alan wrench screws, so I figured that was it but I cannot figure out how to get the blade out. No manual either... I tried to find one, but I think this one is so old, they never put the manual on line. Does any one have any ideas on how to change the blade on this?

Thanks!

I haven't used that particular saw but looking at this picture (www.tradera.com/TIGERSAG-A...9519290#pic ) it looks like you can sight through the slot in the metal foot on one side to get at the allen screw clamping the blade to the reciprocating shaft of the saw.

You might have to move the blade to its furthest extended position. You can do this by (gloved or rag wrapped) hand tugging on the blade or by plugging it in and cheating it out with a light touch on the trigger.

I took all three screws out., the blade will not budge. I wonder now if it is broken somehow. Rats.
      Thanks for the help though!

Try hitting it with some rust penetrating lubricant yet? It's possible that it's gunked in. Also look for little catches and screws on other axises of the blade, possibly on the casing away from the business end...

Definitely soak the whole thing in something like good ol' WD-40 first.

Older reciprocal saws had no quick release, but used 2 or 3 setscrews cranked down tight on the blade to hold it in place. You need to release the setscrews with the allyn keys and then the blade will slide in & out.

If the blade still won't budge then it may be corroded in place, or else jammed in by some broken off part in there. Let's say it's rusted/corroded in place? Then likely wiggling the blade gripped by Vise-grips, or else tapping on sides & end of blade with hammer, might serve to dislodge it. Some sort of penetrating oil might help loosen things too, when squirted into suspected area of jamup.

Failing that, then take it all apart to see what's going on in the hope of being able to fix it. May as well, the way it is now is unusable anyway.

Thanks. I am going to give that a try. I removed all the screws but it will not budge. I will try some PB blaster and if that does not work, try to other suggestions.
  • Re: WAS Sawzall should be "Reciprocating" saw"

In the interest of purity of expression and accuracy:

The expression "Sawzall" is the trade name Milwaukee Inc., uses for its "reciprocating saw."

AEG calls theirs the "AEG Sabre saw" It is hard to know if the "sabre saw" part is trade name or just informative.

As a general proposition you can't trade mark ( in the US) a common word.
So if you want to name your company the Hammer company and in fact you make hammers it should not be possible to get that trade name registered and protected. If however. you don't make Hammers then you probably can name it the Hammer company.

And of course there are plenty of exceptions.
