I have a couple of pallets and some hardware cloth. plus nails, a hammer and a bit of time.

think that will be good to make my own compost bin? What should I do first?

I've found that it's pretty important to make sure that the composting material gets air in from the sides of the bin, so I'm not sure if using hardware cloth (is that the heavy duty wrap they put on bundles of lumber?) is such a good idea. Maybe just build a 4' x 4' bottomless and topless box, and set it directly on the ground. Problem with that is the turning of the compost, but you can always just lift the box away, turn, and set it back over the material.

The way I always make my compost bins is with four 2" diameter posts pounded into the ground, wrapped with green chain link fencing, with one side open. It's worked for me for many years.

My family had one in the woods behind the house when I was growing up. It was just 4 pallets making a topless and bottomless box. We didn't have much trouble with it. Turning it was a bit of work, but we didn't do that often.

Why not just be the pallets about 4 ' apart, bury them about a foot deep and run the hardware cloth across the back (and the sides if you have critter trouble)? Maybe a board across the top back for extra stability. Although a third pallet (if easy to obtain) would certainly be ideal.
