water damage/flaking paint

Ok, I'm new to this tribe and have a little problem. A year ago the roof was leaking and there was a little water damage to a small portion (maybe 2 feet square) of the high living room ceiling. There are now big(palm-of-hand-sized) flakes in the paint. I don't want to have to resurface and repaint the entire living room. Any ideas? I haven't even tried to just pick the big flakes off, because I'd need to set up the ladder, and I don't want to make things worse if that's not the way to go, but I'm getting tired of looking at them. I was acutally thinking of maybe just resurfacing that area only, and putting in a tromp l'oiel type tree over it. It's a curved ceiling and the tree would look like it was somewhat overhanging that corner of the living room.

Paint it with Killz and then re coat the ceiling (or that area) with identical paint.
Often the Killz will prevent the water stain from bleeding through.

However, this is only a solution if the substrate is solid. If the water damaged the plaster or sheet-rock you have to replace that section.

oh jeez honey let me tell you what a pain water damage can be. i had a few sections of my last apartment that were so water damaged i couldn't get paint to stay on for more than a month. due to the srummy-crummy landlord scenario there was no way i was getting new walls. and so- cliff, as usual, is right. with enough coats of killz i finally got my paint to stay on my walls. (i think it took 6-8) sounds like your damage isn't nearly as bad- so it should work great for you :) and if you don't have the paint for the walls just take in a piece of the peeled paint to the paint store and they'll match it... good luck!

There's no actual water staining, just the flaking paint. I don't have identical paint for the walls - you know how many different shades of white there are in the world, and then if it's been on the walls for a while, it takes on a different hue. I'm just tired of staring at the flakes.
:-p Thanks for your advise and I will try and see what I can do on the weekend.

Also check the baseboards along the adjacent wall... gravity works and you could end up with water damage down there too.

          cover it up with something.

          a poster or a tapestry?

It's in an impossible area to hang anything - curved part where wall becomes ceiling, way high up - 9 foot ceiling.

That's where you usually see water damage first. I would recommend spraying the area with aerosol oil based primer. As many coats as you can stand doing and then paint it. If the paint doesn't stick or discolors, it means you need to rip out all the water damaged drywall, replace it, tape and float, texture, primer, and then paint.

This damage occurred maybe a year ago, and the landlady has since replaced the roof. But I'm beginning to think the whole room will need to be repainted, so I'm just going to call her. I hate getting her invovled, but this does look like it's beyond me, unelss
I'm willing to live witha spotty paint job.

Ha! The landlady has asked us to do it - paint the whole living room ourselves - says she will pay for all the materials and knock off $200 rent. Everything is circular these days. My bf told her we were thinking of painting the ceiling purple with gold stars, and she got a little scared, though. She wants it ordinary off-white.
