I am sure this has been dealt with before but I could not find it on a search. I need to put some sheet insulation on the outside of my sister's foundation. I thought of attaching the insulation to 2' x 8' pieces of plywood and angle it out from the house where the siding meets the foundation. Or attaching the insulation directly to the foundation. It is part cinder block part boulders. She doesn't want the siding screwed into. Will "liquid nails" type of glue work hold up thru the winter? lots of snow and ice here in Maine.

If it's your sister's house, ask her to decide.

Wed, August 5, 2009 - 6:16 AMIf the type of adhesive is specifically made for that application ( read the label) then yes, >>IF<< you have a perfectly clean surface to glue to ! That also includes no paint on the block. Making sure that there is good flashing along the top of the insulation, and that the seams are sealed to prevent water from getting in between and freezing. that would push the insulation away from the wall pulling it loose.

Re: insulation on a foundation
Wed, August 5, 2009 - 2:12 PMDig the earth away so you can get in there and just lay the foam insulation up against the concrete blocks. First however, I recommend that you high pressure wash it, let it dry, and coat the whole surface with some waterproofing . You can use Drylok or asphalt.
Then lay the foam up against the block and back fill. I see no reason to try to attach it so long as you are digging all the way to the bottom.
