What a Great Board!

Hi Everyone:

I'm new here.

I was wondering... would walnut facial/body scrub clog up a bathtub drain? Draino didn't work and I use a hair catcher, so only a few hairs go down the drain. I'm very careful about this because of plumbing problems my parents had while I was growing up. Now, I'm really retentive about plumbing.

Anyhoo, any suggestions regarding walnut shell body scrub and clogged tub drains and how to unclog it?

Thanks,

Azeeza

Even for ground up shells? I guess I should tell you that the drain faces up, but the bar holding the metal stopper on goes sideways. Would a snake work OK sideways rather than up and down?

Thanks, I know nothing about diy and I have a million questions -). I don't know how I've never seen this board before! Today is my lucky day :-)

Yeah, a snake goes around bends in plumbing and that's why it's called a snake. Since it is going to physically break up whatever clog is there, it doesn't matter so much the nature of the blockage as long as you can push it through and out of the way. I would not use draino.

I agree this is a great tribe. There were a couple of threads on plumbing a couple of years back that are so massively informative that they should be enshrined somewhere, or archived somewhere easy to get at.

Snakes works in all directions. They are not limited by gravity. If there's a pipe they follow it.
All the operator has to do is keep rotating it and pushing it.

You can rent a really good electrically powered one from any rental center.

LOL! The snake went into the drain about 12 inches and no further. My husband tried for about 10 minutes with both ends and he pulled the stopper and the thing attached to it out prior to the snaking to no avail. There might be a sharp angle that the snake can't bend to.

    Sigh,

Orrrrr, there's something stuck in the drain 12" in. A snake may dot dislodge a solid object. removal of the J or P trap ( the big U shaped part under the sink" may be in order.

It's a tub and it's built into the side of the wall and floor, it's also a ceramic tub. I can't see the drain except that it goes straight to the east side and I think there's a bend in it. My husband pulled the stopper out and a it had a metal hinge on it connected to another metal hinge and it had a piece that looked like it didn't connect to anything, but it had sort of a slide looking shape to it, like it slid into whatever piece couldn't be seen by the naked eye. Neither my husband nor I have ever seen anything like it before. My husband thought the water went down fine, but I'm the one who has been taking baths and I've noticed the water had been going down more slowly after I had been using the ground up walnut shell scrub. This is really weird.

My advice is to buy a larger snake, one of the $25-$30 ones that's like 25 feet long and has a plastic case and hand crank. I tend to get drain problems about once every other year with my house, either slow draining or a clog. I bought one of these a few years ago and it's solved the problem every time. I do the main drain from the house first, then work my way up to the bathtub or sink that's draining slow after.

Thanks for all your help. The slow drain MAY BE solved. There was a little bit of grime on the stopper's two part hinged metal and I wiped it off. The water seems to go down faster now. I may not need the snake after all.
